Desert Shield, Desert Storm was published in 2001 on behalf of USCENTCOM to cover the period beginning with the Iraqi build-up and subsequent invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990 to the commencement of Operation Desert Shield later that month, ending in Operation Desert Storm and the conclusion of the conflict in late February of 1991.

The title is an acknowledgment to the men and women of fire, police and other emergency services in New York and New Jersey, and covers the construction of the ship, its application in modern marine warfare, as well as the history of the five previous ships to bear the name ‘New York. In her bow she carries 7.5 tons of steel melted down from the ruins of the World Trade Center. Everywhere she goes she will be a visible and defiant reminder of the 3,000 lives lost in the attack eight years ago on 9/11: the worst attack ever suffered on American soil.
