Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital city, is a teeming, thriving metropolis, home to 12 million people and to over 400,000 colourful rickshaws – the highest number of any city in the world.

It was founded in 1608 as the seat of the Imperial Mughal Viceroy of Bengal and has been developing rapidly since the 1970s into the modern city it is today. Dhaka is also the country’s centre of industry, commerce and culture. Motijheel is the city’s main commercial area where one finds all the modern office blocks and businesses. The main waterfront is found in Sadarghat, on the banks of the river Buriganga where one can hop on a paddle steamer or a floating dhaba, bustling with activity. Visitors to Dhaka can sample the varied and delicious local cuisine in any one of the capital’s hundreds of restaurants, food stalls and cafes.

Bangladesh itself is a land of enormous beauty with hundreds of winding rivers and crystal-clear lakes surrounded by green hills and luxuriant rainforests. The home of the world’s largest mangrove forest and of the last few remaining places on the planet where one can still see the Bengal tiger in the wild, also the country’s national animal.
